Princess Tree - Paulownia Tree (Paulownia tomentosa)

Paulownia Tree (Paulownia tomentosa) seeds

This is one of the most amazing trees. Very fast growing. I had one growing in a container and it grew over 5 feet in one year from a seed. Once planted in the ground, it is not unusual for this tree to grow 15-20 feet in a single year under the right conditions. The blooms of this tree resemble Foxglove and are quite stunning. Paulownia, also called the Princess Tree, makes a great ornamental as well as shade tree topping out at around 75 feet. The seed is tiny and looks like dust. Easy to grow but the small seed requires a slightly different planting method than most garden seeds. You have to plant them in soil-less potting mix and just barely dust them with sifted potting mix. Keep the planted seeds moist and warm until they germinate. Transplant to a pot once they sprout and start to grow. I like to keep things like this in a pot the first year and then plant them out the next spring. Plants that make seeds like this typically have low germination, so you should plant the entire package of seeds. We can't really count the seed but will give you enough that you should get at least 3 to 5 trees.
