Black Turtle Bean

Heirloom beans black turtle

I first grew this bean in 1984 after becoming a fan of it in the summer of 1980. It was in 1980 that as a teenager I worked as a cook during the Mariel Boatlift that sent thousands of Cuban refugees to be processed through Arkansas. One of the best dishes I have ever had was a Cuban dish made with Black Turtle Beans. The beans were cooked like you would any dry bean but with equal parts Onion, Sweet Peppers, Tomatoes and Bacon mixed in and seasoned with a little garlic, salt and pepper. Good stuff. Black Beans are so easy to grow you will think they are a weed. Well worth a spot in the garden.
